Acura Catalytic Converter
Air pollution has now become a global issue and almost every small or big country on this earth is facing it. Exhaust gases are the major cause behind the air pollution. Several laws were made, approved and enacted only to control the air pollution especially from exhaust gases coming from a vehicle. That is why each and every auto-parts manufacturer developed a pollution-controlling device which checks the exhaust gas prior to its emission to open air. This device is Catalytic Converter. Catalytic converters or Catalitic converters are used in almost all engine-equipped machines.
Though the catalytic converter was invented by Eugene Houdry still its first mass production started in 1973. In mid 70s power-sapping pellet-style catalysts were used instead of modern catalytic converter.
Acura catalytic converter reduces the perniciousness of emissions from an internal combustion engine by providing an environment for a chemical reaction. A high-flow Acura catalytic converter allows slow and free, gas flow through the exhaust system while reducing the toxicity emitting from the engine. Acura catalytic converter is a three-way catalytic converter which stores oxygen from the exhaust gas when the air fuel ratio goes lean. Acura catalytic converter is damaged by catalyst poisoning, varied emission regulation etc. which badly affects your Acura car's performance, drivability, and fuel economy. All such issues of Acura catalytic converter can be easily diagnosed by Temperature sensors, Oxygen sensors & NOx sensors.
Acura catalytic converter comprises:
- The core or substrate: A ceramic/ stainless steel foil honeycomb; increases the surface area available to support the catalyst, and is often called a "catalyst support".
- The washcoat: A mixture of silica and alumina (washcoat) make converters more efficient when added to the core by forming a rough, irregular surface which is big enough than the flat core surface.
- The catalyst: Platinum , a precious metal is the most active catalyst and is widely used; generally avoided because of unwanted additional reactions and/or cost.
Carbon monoxide (CO) gas: A poisonous, colorless, and odorless gas.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC): Produced from unburned fossil fuels.
Low level ozone (troposphere ozone or O3): Photolysis breaks hydrocarbons such as aldehyde and NOx producing photochemical smog.
NOx: Mono-nitrogen oxides (NO and NO 2) are known as NOx; produced during combustion at high temperatures; a major cause of Acid Rain.
Nitrogen gas: Major constituent of air (78%) which is a colorless, odorless & tasteless gas; passes directly through your Acura's engine.
Carbon dioxide: Byproduct of combustion of fossil fuel like gasoline/ petrol; Carbon in the fuel bonds with the air's oxygen; One of the major factor contributing to Global Warming.
Water vapor (Aqueous vapor): Produced either by evaporation of liquid or sublimation of ice; Hydrogen in the fuel bonds with the air's oxygen.
