The
Mitsubishi Company was founded on the 22nd of April, 1970. It has been a company with vision and has had tie-ups with several foreign companies and big names in the field right from the beginning. Right from the very first President of the company, Tomto Kubo,
Mitsubishi has been a pioneer in the field of setting up alliances with foreign companies like Daimler Chrysler, Hyundai Motor Company and Volvo. The marketing strategies and other policies adopted by Mitsubishi proved successful and the company's annual production increased manifold from 2, 50,000 to more than 1.5 million units.
Mitsubishi Company has adopted the logo of three red diamonds which was chosen by Yataro Iwasaki, who was the founder of Mitsubishi. The term "Mitsubishi" is made up of the word "mitsu" meaning three and "hishi" meaning "water chestnut". In Japanese the word refers to a rhombus or a diamond.
The operations of
Mitsubishi Model Car in the field of automobiles dates back to the year 1917 when the company launched Model A, which was the very first of the completely hand built sedan. Due to reasons of being more expensive as compared to the products of it competitors Model A was discontinued in the year 1921. The year 1934 saw the merger of the Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. and
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. Into a new company the "Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI)". The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was then the biggest private Ltd Company in Japan.
The second attempt was seen in the year 1937 when MHI brought out the PX33, a sedan that was developed for military purposes. The PX33 held the distinction of being the very first passenger car built by Japan that used the technology of the four wheel drive.
The year 1950 saw the
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries being split into three namely, the West Japan Heavy Industries, East Japan Heavy Industries and the Central Japan Heavy Industries. The three companies soon had alliances with foreign partners and were involved in the operations of importing foreign vehicles and marketing them. The business scenario however, saw a radical change in a few years time and the regional companies were soon merged in the year 1964 to form the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. With the company reporting good sales it was decided to focus the attention on the automotive segment and thus, was born the
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation as we know it today.
The year 1982 saw Mitsubishi making an entry into the American Market. The company went public in the year 1988 being Japan's only automobile manufacturer to have a private stake. The public issue generated funds for the company to clear its existing debts and also have a strong presence in the South-East Asian markets.

Mitsubishi Company introduced the Mitsubishi kei car in the year 2006. Adopting a strategy that would contribute to the company's overall profitability steps like elimination of slow moving models, cutting of jobs and thus, in turn cutting costs were adopted. The
Mitsubishi is known to have its automobile manufacturing facilities in Japan, the United States, Australia, Philippines, Netherlands and Thailand. The giant automobile manufacturer has three research and development centers and has a worldwide presence in over 170 countries.
