Pontiac AC Compressor
General Motors uses Pontiac as a brand sell league performance vehicles. When referred as "performance vehicle" and that to from someone like GM, we're certainly expecting the best. Pontiac only packages grade parts both interior and exterior to provide you with high level performance with utmost ride comfort. Air-conditioner is the most important comfort accessory a car has, and when it's to a brand like Pontiac, the Air-Conditioner has to be match up to its name.
Ever wondered what makes the Pontiac Air-conditioner cool? Its actually a refrigerator arranged in a different fashion. Your Pontiac AC system is a composition of several parts with AC compressor being the central and most important part to its functioning. A belt connected to your Pontiac's engine controls the AC compressor system and is known as AC compressor pulley. This belt is purposely attached and detached to the Pontiac AC compressor through the AC compressor clutch. When the belt is attached it makes your Pontiac AC Compressor to function exactly like a human heart. Heart??? Let me tell you why- it pumps the coolant to all parts of your vehicle's air conditioning system in closed cycle. Your Pontiac's AC compressor lets-in the low pressure coolant gas coming from the inlet side of the AC system which is comprised of an accumulator and an evaporator or the receiver or direr. The compressor compresses and changes the low pressure, low temperature refrigerant to a high temperature and high pressure. After compression in the compressor, the high temperature refrigerant is then let-out into the condenser and sent back into the evaporator and hence completes the cycle.
Like every bit of machinery, the Pontiac AC Compressor is prone to damages or degradation with time, regular check-ups is mandatory for your Pontiac's AC compressor. You'll never like to get into a scenario like this:
It's a hot summer afternoon and you need to drive 100 miles for your client meeting. You get into your Pontiac G8 and start with the drive. Suddenly you start feeling the heat inside, you look at your AC controller only to find it at maximum, a few minutes into the drive and you feel all the heat is inside your car.
Wondering what could cause this- its probably a case of faulty AC compressor. A leak in the AC Compressor allows the refrigerant to escape, without the refrigerant your Pontiac's Air conditioning system is of no use.
Important!!! A system should only be checked for leaks by adding the fluorescent dye that is available in most auto stores, and it must be used as per the guidelines printed on the container. It might be the case when the leak was big enough to allow all the gas to escape, try and locate valve-stem resembling part. Now, cautiously (use eye protection) thrust a screw-driver (or anything similar) to try and release pressure, nothing comes out, here is your problem. Moreover here are a few important points to consider which can stop you from doing something which is ILLEGAL:
It's ILLEGAL to check for refrigerant by thrusting something into the fitting.
Looking for a vent is ILLEGAL as it lets the coolant into the atmosphere.
It's also ILLEGAL to put more refrigerant into a system prone to leak (as, again, youre letting the refrigerant into the environment).
Save yourself from all such hassles perform the routine maintenance and check up of your Pontiac AC Compressor.
