Toyota Catalytic Converter

Types of a Toyota Catalytic Converter
- Two way catalytic converter: Oxidation reaction converts harmful Carbon Monoxide into less hazardous Carbon dioxide; unburnt hydrocarbons are further oxidized into Carbon dioxide and water.
- Three way catalytic converter: Reduces Nitrogen Dioxide into Nitrogen and Oxygen; Carbon monoxide is oxidized to Carbon Dioxide and water; Unburnt hydrocarbons are further oxidized into Carbon dioxide and water.
Catalysts used by converter are Reduction and oxidation catalyst. Both these catalysts have a ceramic structure and are coated with metal catalyst which consists of structure platinum, rhodium and/or palladium. The thought of creating such a system was to display maximum area of catalyst to eliminate maximum current while reducing the amount of catalyst which needs to be used as the catalyst is very expensive.
The Reducing Catalyst
The reducing catalyst is the prime work of the catalytic converter. It uses platinum and rhodium in reduction of nitrogen oxide discharges. When such elements reach the catalyst, the catalyst
splits the nitrogen atom from element and holds on to it, by releasing oxygen. The nitrogen then binds with other nitrogen which is stuck to the catalyst.
The Oxidizing Catalyst
The next work of the catalytic converter is to work as a oxidation catalyst. It minimizes the organic compounds and carbon monoxide by burning them catalyst which consists of platinum and palladium. The catalyst thus helps in the reaction of carbon monoxide and organic compounds with remaining oxygen in the eliminated gas.
Ways to reduce pollution:
The catalytic converter helps in reducing the pollution, but there is still room for improvement. A very big shortcoming with the catalytic converter is that it only works at a very high temperature. When car is cold at before ignition or in cold weather, the catalytic converter does nothing to reduce the pollution. The solution to this problem is to keep distance between engine and catalytic converter as minimum. This means that hot eliminated gases reach the converter and heat it up quickly but this can reduce the life of the converter by exhibiting it to extremely high temperatures. Most manufacturers place the converter under the front passenger seat; far from the engine so that it stays away from heat and it increases the life of converter. Preheating catalytic converter using electric resistance heaters could be good way to reduce emissions. But the 12-volt electrical systems in most cars don't provide enough energy to heat the catalytic converter quickly. Hybrid cars having high voltage battery packs can render enough power to heat up the catalytic converter.
